I've been writing books, one way or another, since I was old enough to hold a pencil. Back then I made the books myself with craft paper and sellotape. I was sure that I would be an auther. When I grew older I turned to art (and IT) instead, but I kept on writing. I wrote novels and short stories for myself, but games for other people — you can see some of my game publishing credits over at the Games (home) page.

A lot of that history of writing exists only on paper (and crumbling paper at that) though a few items of older writing are online here. More recently I started writing short stories again. One was published in the "Tales from Earth" anthology produced as part of the Perpexcity Alternate Reality Game, another was serialised on the RPG Fiction Blog. And then, just this year, I self-published my very first short story collection!

So, in a way, I've come full circle.

Book Reviews

The Drowning Land

During 2015 and 2016 I devoted myself to a novel set in the distant past ... really distant, the Mesolithic period in Doggerland (what is now the North Sea). The first two chapters are available here for people to read.

Short Stories (see all)

Tales of the Castle: Seacliff

A new version of a story that I wrote as a present for my Grandmother when I was 17. A dream, a nightmare, a revelation. In some ways a story about depression.

That Night David had a Dream

A very silly story

Solomon's Gate

A ghost story in the style of M.R. James. Solomon's gate is an extract from my first story collection The Night Alphabet.

A Midsummer's Night

The inspiration for this was quite simple, the sound of rain on the leaves outside my bedroom window. The version linked above is a recent re-write of something I wrote as a teenager, intended for a magazine contest submission.

You can read the original here

The Liquorice Shop

A (very) short story about a sweet shop.

Dream Diary

A piece of Pokemon inspired Fan-Fiction / Horror.

I wrote this as a piece for Contested Ground's A|State, though it was never accepted.
