The Shadow and the Bloodspeakers

Here's how I've reasoned it out (being me, it's long): The Bloodspeakers have never been comfortable being lumped together with the non-human Shadowlands creatures. They prefer something even remotely related to humanity, like the Undead. So, either the Moto or Suru or Yori must have thought of something: A bargain. We help you be one with your family (ie all Moto who die rise again as Undead Moto) and you help us take over the Shadowlands with brute force.

So, the Bloodspeakers tried to do whatever it is that they wanted to do. Technically it might've been simple. However, there was just one tiny problem, which they couldn't solve: How to force the Moto souls straight back into their undead bodies. If they could solve that, they would have the Moto.

Through research, they found out that the Burning Words would be capable of performing the task. However, they needed the Soul of a Thunder to harness it. So, they captured Yakamo. Through several misadventures, they then lost the body and soul of Yakamo.

Then, Suru bumped into Kamoko. He saw that he could get hold of her through her mother. Unfortunately, he determined that her mother had already been caught by the Shadow. So, another deal was struck: In return for the release of the soul of Kamoko's mother, the Bloodspeakers, who already knew lots of things they could do to souls, would teach the Shadow how to consume souls. They would also allow the Shadow to consume all the souls it wanted, except for the souls of the Moto. The Shadow, then, in preparation, proceeded to block the passage into Jigoku, resulting in the reports of wandering spirits.

Shahai, being already in the Unicorn lands, was sent to offer a deal to Kamoko: In exchange for the freedom of her mother's soul, Kamoko would surrender her own soul to free the Burning Words. As a side effect of this, she would become the leader of the Undead Moto. (sometime before this, Shinjo had returned and killed off all the Kolat within her clan. This surely would've resulted in a lot of souls hanging about).

Being the dutiful daughter she is, Kamoko accepted the deal. So she made her way to Volturnum, which seems to be where the Burning Words were located. Possibly, the Shadow relocated it's stronghold there after Morikage was discovered to be closer to the apex of the flood of souls.

Once within the confines of the Burning Words, Kamoko willingly gave up her soul, freeing them. Perhaps with some form of arcane manipulation, the Bloodspeakers used the Words to lay a sort of curse on the whole of the Moto: Immediately after death, they would rise once again as Undead. And be of one Family again. Under the Leadership of Kamoko.

With that part of the bargain completed, the Shadow was free to savour its own reward, and 'unblocked' the passage to Jigoku. The souls of the dead were immediately drawn in. However, it positioned itself in such a way that all the souls had to pass through it.

The past has now been unNamed.

I'm also guessing that when the undead Moto rose up, there must have been skirmishes with their live brethren, thus bringing even more back. Continuing from someone's question last week: Are the Moto in the Burning Sands affected as well?
