Wood Elf Spearmen (and Spearwomen) are the rank and file of their fighting force, younger adults from Kins with no skill in fighting (such as the Deerkin, Crowkin, Jaykin and the like). These Elves enter battle garbed in their everyday hunting leathers and armed with the tools of a hunter's trade, spears, gutting knives, nets and snares.
Like the spearmen of most races they are trained to fight in close ranks of ordered men, but unlike most other spearmen they make use of their nets in combat. This necessitates a slightly more open order of battle, which is as well, given that the numbers of a fighting Elf unit are almost always less than that of their Human, Ork or Lizard foes.
Despite being the rank and file (along with Swordsmen and Archers), it is not usual for Spearmen to fight in most circumstances. When raids are conducted, or war made between Kins, it is the Bearkin, Wolfkin, Stagkin and the like who make up the core of the fighting force. Only when an entire tribe or more is threatened do the common Elves take up arms with their more martial cousins. It is for this reason that, even though they are inexperienced troops, the Wood Elf Spears show great courage in battle, for they know they are fighting for their homes and families.
