I did this when I was at a loose end one night. The show itself is kind of fun, check it out if you can. All the best Al "Of course not sir, you are the very picture of sanity. Now, I've ironed your tights and put away your exploding gas balls." Alfred, BATMAN: MASK OF THE PHANTASM LEGAL STUFF BUGS, ROS, ED and BECKETT are all copyright BBC Enterprises. AUTHOR'S NOTE: BUGS is an English TV series concerning Beckett, an ex-Secret Service Agent, Ed, a pilot and Ros, a Hacker and Computer specialist who act as freelance security consultants and do general sort of SNEAKERS type things. The series itself is very silly but good fun(The last episode I saw concerned an airline being sabotaged by a rival who had managed to get it's hands on a Stealth Fighter, that sort of thing). FEDERAL BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION Special Affairs Division Security Clearance Roosevelt File Number X200 The "Bugs" Unit Investigating Agents Special Agent Catherine Maria Shenko Special Agent Daniel Philip Hanrahan INTRODUCTION This Special Affairs File takes a rather different tack to many. No actual crime has been committed, but this group of people have shown such consistent expertise and, in several cases, blind luck, that an analysis of them was instigated, with the possibility of indoctrinating them into the DISTANT EYE Project. ORGANISATION HISTORY The Bugs Team was formed in 1992, when Marcus Beckett, an agent of The Hive, an ultra-secret section of British Intelligence(See File X202-Upper Echelons of British Intelligence), discovered his immediate superior had stolen the OWAM(Orbital Weaponry Assault Management), a mainframe capable of controlling eight hundred weapons satellites simultaneously, and had blamed Beckett for it. On the run, Beckett enlisted the aid of Ros Mckay, a Hacker and Techie who has been linked, from time to time with the English Virtual Adept community. Together with Ed O'Halloran, an Australian Pilot with an extremely shadowy past, the three successfully recovered ORAM and cleared Beckett's name. They then set up in business together, as Bugs. NOTABLE CASES In 1993, the Bugs team successfully closed down PROMETHEUS ROBOTICS, a company which had been producing "Assassin Robots" for the highest bidder. It's worth noting that PROMETHEUS was later restarted, after a corporate takeover from a CIA Holding Company. Later the same year, the team foiled the hijacking of a nuclear warhead by an English Nationalist Terrorist Unit. This same Unit was later indoctrinated into the English Secret Service, and a great deal of enmity exists between them and Beckett in particular. In 1995, they successfully discovered, exposed and destroyed a semi-intelligent computer virus, developed in the 1960s which had accidentally been released into the MOD Computer network. Most notably, earlier this year they were part of a multinational group of Law Enforcement and Security Consultants called in to deal with an Armageddon Cult embedded in the Command Structure of NATO. CONTACT WITH AWAKENED RACES To date, the Bugs unit has had only one contact with the Awakened. Richard Llewelyn, the Vampire Prince of London hired them to check the security of his companies and estates, although they remain unaware of Llewellyn's true nature. HISTORY AND PSYCHOLOGICAL PROFILE OF EACH MEMBER\ Marcus Alexander Beckett History Following a degree in Criminal Psychology and Forensic Pathology, Marcus Beckett applied for, and was accepted into the Metropolitan Police. There, he quickly rose through the ranks to Detective Sergeant, distinguishing himself in several famous cases, several of which would have fallen under the tenure of this department, had they occurred in the US. Most notable amongst these was the delusional "Watcher", a serial killer who took the eyes of his victims, believing he could see into men's souls through them. As a result of Beckett's expertise and handling of these cases, he was approached in 1990 by the Hive and offered a job as an analyst and field agent. He accepted and proved himself equally adept at the technology based cases and operations the Hive specialises in. Following the ORAM incident, he has left the Hive and remains with Bugs. Psychological Profile Beckett is, at first glance, the most level-headed of the three, as well as the most versatile. His analytical background, together with his experience as a detective means that he is able to approach every situation from several different viewpoints and has excelled in second guessing the criminal in many of his cases. Despite this analytical exterior, Beckett is an affable, likable man who follows orders as easily as he gives them. However, Beckett has one gaping flaw, a very deep mistrust of authority. His degree, and time with the Police taught him how to work within a hierarchy, whilst the ORAM incident, for the first time in his life, showed Beckett that his superiors could be wrong. As a result of this, he remains highly suspicious of anyone he has no prior knowledge of, or who has seniority over him. Ros Mckay History Mckay was born into a family of engineers and programmers, her mother, Jaclyn was a highly respected programmer whilst her father, Carl was instrumental in designing the large scale mainframes used by companies the world over. As a result, Mckay grew up around technology, and has shown an instinctive gift for working with it. She attended Oxford, gaining an Honours in Computer Science and Cybernetics, and spent five years in America, working for several of the larger Shadow Budget companies(There are unconfirmed rumours that Mckay was part of the team which designed the Threat Assessment software for the B3 and, more importantly, spent six months at Area 51 in Nevada). She returned to England at the end of her contract and, with the impressive pay she'd accrued, was content to rest for a while. She was in the process of starting up a Consultancy when the ORAM incident occurred, and the Consultancy became Bugs. Psychological Profile Mckay is a calm, easygoing woman with an almost childlike delight in technology. Where Beckett is an analytical thinker, Mckay is an instinctive thinker, capable of understanding and dealing with a situation or device simply by "tinkering with it"(There has been some tension between her and Beckett as a result of this). She is capable of tremendous deductive leaps, but her true strength lies in her technical aptitude. Mckay provides the technological backbone of the team, constructing their equipment and, thanks to her contacts, providing many of their customers. However, she is acutely aware of her vulnerable she is without her technology and began taking Kickboxing lessons early last year. Edward O'Halloran History Little or nothing is known about O'Halloran prior to 1988, when he appears in an Australian newspaper as the "Hero Pilot" who assisted the police in diffusing a hijacking at Sydney Airport. He apparently disarmed five of the hijackers and had killed two before the others were even aware he had left the cockpit. To say O'Halloran was merely the pilot is something of an understatement. In short, we believe him to have been a deep cover Special Forces Officer who was placed on the plane should a hijacking occur. His lack of background further strengthens this hypothesis. We do know O'Halloran had American citizenship at the same time as Mckay, and that he was part of Archangel Two, the Shadow Budget Special Forces Unit which guards the bases at Dulce and Area 51. Several photos from UFOlogists place O'Halloran as a "Cammo Dude" at the Area 51 site, at the same time Mckay was working there, suggesting their friendship began here. Over the course of his time with Bugs, O'Halloran has demonstrated expertise in firearms of all kinds, demolitions, electronics, surveillance, counter-intelligence, skills consistent with a high-ranking Taekwondo black belt and impressive mechanical skills. Additionally, he has shown himself to be an expert driver and pilot. Psychological Profile O'Halloran is, by nature, a joker, incapable of resisting the last word in a conversation or a wisecrack at a moment of tension. This is a recognised defensive measure, suggesting that he feels he needs to atone for what he's done in the past. Additionally, he has refused to kill during his time with Bugs and has become infamous for taking needless risks and still managing to do the job. In short, O'Halloran is potentially the most unpredictable and dangerous member of the team. CONCLUSION The Bugs unit is very small and, at present, based exclusively in England. However, their overlapping areas of expertise and track record speak for themselves. I believe they would make a valuable addition to DISTANT EYE and both Agent Hanrahan and myself believe they should be approached as soon as possible. Special Agent Catherine M. Shenko and Special Agent Daniel P. Hanrahan Playing The BUGS team in the World of Darkness General They can be played pretty much as the TV series shows them. Basically, these are three professionals who view everything they do as a job, nothing more. They're not particularly interested in the Awakened's struggles, unless anything they do harms innocents and, as such, can be a valuable Sleeper asset, as Llewellyn has found out. Individually, Beckett comes across as the consummate professional, attentive, enthusiastic and almost entirely monosyllabic unless talking to the others. Ros is the most outgoing of the three, finding constant delight in her work and her technology. Ed has a tendency to get flamboyant in dangerous situations and should be played as a compulsive joker, apparently incapable of taking anything seriously. Similarly, the tension between the three should be played up a lot more than it is in the series. Other Races' Views London Camarilla: Interesting. Llewellyn speaks very highly of them.
