Dice


Dice are used in the majority of roleplaying games to generate random results, which in turn are used to determine the success or failure of actions attempted by characters. Most games use a variety of dice with a varying number of faces (known as polyhedral dice). The most common are four, six, eight, ten, twelve, and twenty sided dice.

In all games polyhedral dice are refered to in a notation derived from Dungeons & Dragons. A dice is noted by the letter 'D' followed by the number of faces,

If more than one dice is to be rolled then the number is prefixed.

Finally if a number it to be added to, or subtracted from, the total, it is suffixed to the dice notiation.

Gamers refer to dice in conversation by their shortened names, e.g. "Chuck me over a dee twenty!"
