Au's Blood

The Blood of Au is the water, tinged red, that flows from a sacred spring, the font of Au, deep below the rock of the Great Temple in Tanaloth. It is said that they are the bloody tears of Atur himself, as he weeps for the world. This font was said by the prophet to be the most sacred site of the world. The water from the shrine, distilled into small vials made by the priests of the font, are vital ingredients in the prayers of Atur's Priests.

Alter

This is the name given to the plinth on which an idol of Atur rests, or on which an image of a saint is kept. The alter is also the usual resting place of the ritual items for the Mass, the Chalice, Ewer and Candle. Sometimes the Chalice, and the Blood of Au, are kept in a cupboard within the Alter, fronted by a pair of panel doors. In the finest shrines these panels will be painted.

Alhedra, Saint

Alhedra was the prophet who brought down the rule of the Kings of old times. She brought the words of Atur to the first people, but was beheaded by the King for preaching the dominance of the true faith. After her death the people rose up and destroyed the King's forever. Her words were set down to form the Canons. She is depicted as a pale woman, the line of blood around her neck echoing her death.

Akur, Saint

Saint Akur is called the lawmaker. He was the leader of Atur's word after the death of Alhedra, who founded the churches and directed the building of the walls and the seminaries. He is the patron saint of Tanaloth itself. His hand is held in the western church as a great relic, though his body and resting place are long lost. It is said that agents of the Dark God's slew him for his work, but with them died the last knoweldge of where Tanaloth lay.

Anointment

At the festival of sunreturn in a child's tenth year he is anointed. All the children being anointed go to their church dressed in white and are given a taste of the Blood of Au (probably for the only time in their life unless they become a priest). After this mass they go to the font and are given their adult name, and have their childhood name taken away.

Archon of Yesuva

The title Archon of Yesuva is that given to the Priest in charge of the Church of Yesuva the blessed in Tanaloth. The Archon of Yesuva is officially responsible for the blessing of all those at sea. As such he sometimes comes into conflict with the Bishops of the Isles.

Aumbrey

An Aumbrey is a secure area in a church where items associated with the Mass can be kept. It is different from the space in the alter for the Chalice, Ewer and Candle, the most likely contents of the Aumbrey might be salt, holy water, chalk, a copy of the cannons, blessed bread or water, tapers, and so forth. Aumbreys are often built into the walls of private chapels so that some sort of offering is available to place on the alter outside of the normal times of Mass.
