In the depths of the castle the Duke meets with his advisors in council. Here are his wife, the Duchess Ollagard, his councilor Matteus, the Knights Ina, Arangorm and Pelgor, and Surrand, master of the castle guard. For many hours they argue by candle-light, discussing what is to be done about the rumors. Matteus dismisses the threats and Surrand laughs at the thought of a threat to the castle while passionate Ina worries for the peasants. Arangorm and Pelgor, wise in the ways of war, council caution.
