On the walls of the castle the Duke of Crannoch, Halldad, looks pensivly out to sea. What can this threat to his land be, he wonders, and from where does it come? Is it simply the alarm of pesants that are scared by a few bandits into sending to the castle for help, or is there something more? He fears for the safety of his land, and for his ability to protect it. He has his wife, and his daughter, the princess Illana, to look after. Finally he turns away from the view of the sea and enters the castle, he has called a council of his advisors to discuss the matter.
