ECUADOR
Ecuador
- the country of my heart and soul. Mi país de corazón. A country the size of the state of Oregon, population, 11 million - 5% black, 15% white, 40% mestizo, and 40% indigenous which includes (but is not limited to) the Quichua, Otavalo, Salasaca, Saraguro, Awa, Cayapa, Colorado, Jivaro (aka Shuar), Achuar, Cofan, Siona, Secoya and Huaorani (aka Auca) Indian tribes. The land is as diverse as the people ~ you can go from the chilly snow-capped splendor of the Andes mountains, to the steamy broccoli jungle with the gravy river flowing through it (that's what it looks like from the air!). There are dry deserts, wet marshland, humid jungles, icy snowcaps, gorgeous beaches, vast flatlands, rolling hills and towering mountains. Any time of year, all year around, you can find the weather you want within a day of where you are. Rainy, dry, sunny, cloudy, winter, summer, spring or fall...
You can be on both the northern and the southern hemispheres at the same time while standing on the equator line. It's famous for the Galápagos Islands in the Pacific to the west, but you mustn't go to Ecuador without stopping on the mainland! Wedged in between Colombia to the north and Perú to the south, Ecuador is a small, but tasty slice of sensory pie in South America.
The following are links to other pages about Ecuador:
The Trip Journal pages may be a bit long on the download, but there are a lot of pictures, and I have set up the writing on the top of the page so you can peruse the journal while waiting for the pictures to load at the bottom of each page. -- Last updated 7/29/03 with the 2003 Trip Journal
Old Places and Favorite Old Pictures of Ecuador -- English -- All the pictures from my former Ecuador pages are at the bottom of this page, and again, the writing is at the top to be read while the pictures download. Some pictures are scans of postcards, photo credit to Bolo y Cesar Franco, photographers and owners of POSTALES DEL ECUADOR -- Last Updated 3/23/98
Andes, River, Big_Falls -- A page at the bottom of which are three links of nature pictures taken from a calendar of pictures of Ecuador, They are quite large, but they are so beautiful I wanted to share them anyway... if you have the time, they're well worth the wait. These pictures are the ones that "take me home" :)

I highly recommend the following "coffee table" photo book and CD!!
The Coffee Table Book: Full of excellent pictures showing the heart of Ecuador in a way that can usually only be experienced by seeing it first-hand. The photographer, Fernando Coloma, caught the essence of the country better than any other photographic book I have seen about Ecuador. Throughout the images of this book, (80 pages, 9" by 13", more than 100 photographs) Fernando Coloma gives us a taste of the beauty and naturalness of Ecuador. His work is a continuous effort to value, conserve and project to the world what is left in the Andean highlands and valleys, in the coast and amazonian regions; he shows us, again, this amazing beauty and richness of a megadiverse Ecuador.
The CD: This ecuadorian music CD entitled "Recordando el Pasado," is a remarkable work filled with precious Ecuadorian songs that date many years ago. Jose Q. Coloma, his brother Jorge Coloma and the direction of Rodrigo Saltos have captured the soul of the Ecuadorian traditions and musical culture. The instruments: Bandolin (original from Spain), Guitar, Requinto, Bajo made great music!!
If you are interested in a copy of this CD or the book (or another full of gorgeous pictures of amphibians in Ecuador, contact Jose Coloma, link through the appropriate picture above -- and don't miss his auctionworks store and his eBay store! for even more beautiful books, music and other things from Ecuador! Please be sure to let him know you heard of his site via my Ecuador pages! Thanks!
